Death is a very elusive topic. It has baffled countless philosophers since Socrates and continues to do so. An eternal question remains: What is death? Why die? Emmanuel Levinas is a Jewish philosopher born in Lithuania and later transferred to France. He is a student of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. During the Second World War, all of his family were killed by the Nazis except his wife and daughter About this time too Heidegger joined the Nazi party in Germany. Thus Levinas' central question in life became why is it that a philosopher as wise as Heidegger can join a violent party such as the Nazi. This reflection led him to denounce the violence rooted in Western Philosophy and dethrone metaphysics by proclaiming Ethics as First Philosophy. In a series of posts I will be discussing Levinas but for the meantime may I ask you to read this Introductory article by Dr. Calasanz of ADMU. This is part one of a series of articles about research. This is especially written for my students in Philosophy who were asked to write their own research papers. Notwithstanding, I believe this can also help other researchers out there. Kudos! Dr Romualdo Abulad, SVD, once wrote in his foreword to my friend's thesis that his research or thesis is a testament and crowning glory of his academic life more than his diploma. And indeed I consent to it. Far from being the pre-requisite to land an employment that will merit you high salary, education should be viewed as pagpapakatao. Just like what Dr Jose Rizal said (although in a different line) life is suffering and those who can survive it are only those who have the intelligence and the heart. Therefore, your research must be viewed not only as a burden given by your tempestuous teachers but as challenge of higher calling. First thing to consider is the style. Different schools prescribe different styles. In my case I prefer he Turabian Style (Chicago Manual of Style) because it is more used for humanities and it is more analytic than others. This is also what I ask my students to follow. In the Turabian format you have the option between footnotes and endnotes, as for my students' case I prefer the utilization of footnotes. In Microsoft Word, you only need to click the "reference" tab and then click another known as "insert footnote" in order to produce a footnote and then begin your reference citation. As you can see above that is the steps. Then a number will appear after your quotation and another at the bottom part of the paper like this: The next most important thing to do is to formulate your thesis statement. The Thesis Statement is the heart of your research. It is the goal and the summit of your research. Your research will revolve around this. Below is an example of chapter one (the number of chapters depends on the school's tradition but since I just asking my students to make a baby... thesis then I only require them three chapters: Introduction, Analysis and Conclusion). Chapter one is so easy there's no need to sweat over it but the most difficult there is formulating the thesis statement: what would you like to prove?
Above is the updated version (as of 21 September 2016) of my PHI 121 classes' Research assignment.
